Illuminated Pedestal Display for Snipes "Dunks Since 1985” pop-up museum

In the beginning of 2021 Snipes asked us to help them construct a “Dunks Since 1985” pop-up museum for their new flagship store in Brooklyn. One of the elements we were asked to build for the museum was a set of pedestals for 35 ultra-rare and influential Nike Dunk shoes which needed to be displayed in a creative and secure way.

The original concept for the display was to build illuminated pedestals that were laid out in a grid.

Our first task was to figure out how to make the interior illuminated fixture. We decided to prototype an edge-lit acrylic cross with routed out channels to catch the light.

After a second round of design and prototyping, the grouping of pedestals was modified from it’s original grid layout to more of a pyramid. The client also decided that the look they wanted for the interior light fixture was to have tubular beams which eliminated the edge-lit acrylic option.

For our next prototype, we decided to utilize LED fluorescent replacement bulbs. Our thinking was that this would give the client the tubular look that the wanted, and would allow us to utilize existing wiring/mounting hardware which would make final construction less labor intensive.

After final approval, we began sourcing parts and streamlining the design for quick and easy assembly.

Then we built the base for the pyramid and pre-wired whips to power each of the pedestals.

Finally, we assembled all of the pieces on-site.
